The ability to see is arguably the most dominant of the five senses, as we perceive up to 80 percent of all impressions by means of sight. There are many health conditions that can compromise vision, most notably age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which is a leading cause of vision loss.
AMD is a condition where damage occurs to the light sensing cells of the macula, the small area at the center of the eye’s retina responsible for most of our central vision. At the office of IC Laser Eye Care, our team of ophthalmologists is skilled at treating the condition, including the use of the CentraSight®, a new treatment that helps improve vision for individuals affected by end-stage AMD.
Symptoms of AMD usually develop gradually and without pain and can increase in severity over time. Patients can experience visual distortions, reduced central vision in one or both eyes, the need for brighter light when reading or working, and difficulty recognizing faces or seeing well while driving.
While there is no cure for the condition, treatments can vary depending on how advanced it is. CentraSight® is designed for those with end-stage AMD that involves removing the eye’s natural lens and replacing it with a tiny telescope implant to improve vision and quality of life. The procedure is performed in an outpatient setting by a specially-trained ophthalmologist and takes about an hour. Patients usually return home on the same day. Post surgery, patients may be referred to optometrists and occupational therapists for several weeks of rehabilitation, in order to adapt to the implant and their improved vision level.
