Eyelid Tumors
What Are Eyelid Tumors?
Tumors represent unusual tissue growths that may be either benign (not cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). It’s critical to have eyelid tumors assessed and addressed right away. Even noncancerous tumors can lead to discomfort or irritation of the eye. Typically, a biopsy is conducted to ascertain if an eyelid tumor is benign or malignant. Patients can have benign eyelid lesions surgically removed during their initial visit to IC Laser Eye Care and Suburban Eye Associates.
Most eyelid cancers are basal cell carcinomas, which develop on the eyelid’s surface. These are malignant and rarely spread to other body parts. Although there are also instances of squamous cell carcinomas, sebaceous cell carcinomas, and malignant melanomas on the eyelid, these are much less common.
How Are Eyelid Tumors Treated?
The removal of eyelid tumors is a delicate process that requires specialized surgical expertise. This procedure is carefully planned based on the size, location, and type of the tumor, as well as the need to preserve the functionality and appearance of the eyelid. Initially, the area will be numbed with local anesthesia to ensure the patient’s comfort. The tumor is then meticulously excised with an adequate margin of tissue around the growth to minimize the risk of recurrence.
In cases where a significant portion of the eyelid is affected, reconstructive surgery may be necessary to restore the eyelid’s function and aesthetic appearance. Following the removal, the excised tissue is typically sent to a laboratory for histopathological examination to confirm the nature of the tumor and to inform any further treatment that may be required. Recovery and post-operative care are crucial with follow-up visits to monitor healing and discuss any additional treatments if needed.
What Are the Symptoms of Eyelid Tumors?
Eyelid tumors often present without symptoms and are identified merely as a lump on the eyelid. However, in certain instances, patients may observe common symptoms, such as:
- Pain
- Redness
- Loss of eyelashes
- Bleeding
- Discharge
- Erosion of the skin around the area
